Batmans Bay Art and Craft Society Waterclour Class Saturday 14 May
The first painting we tackled for the day used the reference photo of an early morning scene by Batmans Bay bridge. The low weak sunshine comes from stage left with islands in the faint distance.

After drawing (keeping most of the elements in the photo), some masking fluid is used around the lights and figures. First washes indicate the warm light from the left and provide sky colour reflected in the water.

Second washes to represent the daker tone of the water. Horizontal strokes for the distance and shapely negative spaces for the near.

Rewet sky and drop in purple and warmer mixture for the distant islands.

The same limited pallette colours provide darker shaded side of boat with warm dropped in for the light reflected off the water.

More warms for the sunny side of the piles and their reflections. A greeny varied mix of boat shadow painted in one pass to keep the variation in the colours in the passage of paint.

Some darks applied in one pass having already prepared a good variation of colours ready to apply.

Figures painted as simply as the rest of the painting. Added more strokes to reflections to help keep up the transparency.

Nearly finished. Some rigger brush marks provide calligraphy for ropes, mast structure, etc. Put aside and look at later.

After a later look added some marks to further clarify the pier, extra dose of red on life bouy, shadows to figures. No fiddling!
