QAS May 2011 demonstration painting
Below is the reference photo used for the May class. Bermagui boats in still water. A pleasant composition as it is in the photo but the print quality is quite dark - we will invent our own colours and lessen the distant darks.

After drawing masking fluid applied to top edges - ready for first wash using three blues.

While the sky wash is still wet a mixture of collours and shapes create the distant trees and clutter.

A second wash provides the darker tone of the water but leaves some sky colour reflected.

Reflected darks painted simply and warm jetty colour applied.

Boat colour uses another blue and emphasises the darker bow to lighter aft.

Dark shadowed areas under the jetty and boat windows again painted simply. Foreground rocks painted very simply so as not to distract from main subject.

To finish - rigger brush adds more rigging and boat equipment, more colour to trim on dark side of boats. Large boat gets more hull colour. Put aside to later consider cropping and signing.
