QAS April 2011 demonstration painting
Below is the reference photo used for the April class. The market is in Jakarta on a leaden (polluted) sky with tropical sun backlighting the subjects but lit mostly by the overhead glare. We'll have to move some of the people around to allow the white cap to continue to be the focus of the composition but away from the centre of the painting-to-be.

Drawing, masking on foreground figures, first washes. Warm sky wash indicates the pollution.

Distant shapes wet in wet, other broad passages invented for middle ground objects.

Simple mixture of warm and cool greens for vegetables and produce - leading into the painting.

Dark skin tones against the glare of tropical light. Strong clothing colours leaving lights against the sky.

Added some darks to create contrast for the near shadows. A tube green (Schminke May Greeen) provides the sellers gown colour.

Some more dabs for clothing folds, contents of of baskets. The distant accidental ''cauliflower'' shape is bisected by a panel - this gives the impression of reflections in the windows. Watercolourists need to capitalise on their mistakes! Look at later for cropping, matting and signing.
