QAS November 28 2010 demonstration painting

Below is the photo used as a reference for the painting.  Adaminaby Races.  Various compositions are possible but with Brian O'Neill's suggestion a portrait option was chosen using the arc of led horses in front of the building.

reference photo

The drawing is rather overdone dealing with the horses and minders but guidelines and projection lines have been erased.  Masking fluid applied over the lights on the figures.  First washes emphasise the warm light from the right.

Another wash provides a simple sky keeping the sunshine glow from the right.

wc

The shadowed side of the building gets a wash of warm to cool near the ground which reflects the shadowed ground area.

wc

Some darks represent the openings - not too dark as this is the middleground.

wc

Remove the mask as early as possible to prevent too harder edges.  Applied the lights on the figures and horses.

wc

Some strong darks create the figures - two passes - lights and then the darks. Keep the shadows light (unlike the photo).

wc

To finish - hats and clutter in the background.  More grassy shapes with cooler in the distant left.  Dark dabs on the figures and horses.  Seem to have got away with the red face cover on the middle horse per the photo (could have been a bright colour in the middle of the composition).

Little cropping top and left, matted and signed "Mounting Paddock, Adaminaby Races".
